A bit like baking a cake? Decide what you want in it according to your taste…
With so much choice in the different types of mattresses available in the market today, it can be somewhat mind-boggling for buyers to decide which type of mattress is right for them. Buying a mattress is a unique personal thing and what might be right for one person may not apply to another. Some people prefer a firm sleeping surface whilst others prefer a softer or a more luxurious, supportive feel. At Furniture Kraze, we ask our buyers a number of questions to ascertain their lifestyle and personal choice and advise on the mattress we feel is best for them.
An important point to note is that the most expensive mattress need not be the best mattress for you!
Things to consider: A bit like baking a cake! The type of spring, the amount of filling, the topping, the finish.
We have provided below a summary of some types of mattresses that are commonly sold and available on the market today. We hope you will be able to find one that is right for you!
Non-orthopaedic 13.5 gauge Economical Mattress
This mattress is for those that are on a budget who do not wish to spend a great deal on a mattress. This may be for a number of reasons. The mattress could be for the spare room and unlikely to be used as often as a regular mattress. It might be for a young child or an adult who is light in weight. Landlords also, tend to go for this mattress to furnish their tenants’ homes as they are cheap to buy and are usually replaced at the end of a tenancy.
Made from a 13.5 gauge non-orthopaedic spring covered with a poly pad an some filling. The cover of the mattress is often stitchbond but at Furniture Kraze we prefer to use damask material even for the cheaper mattresses as this not only looks more attractive but extends the life of the mattress. The depth of the mattress is around 7 inches.
Orthopaedic 12.5 gauge Mattress
People that prefer a firmer sleeping surface usually go for an orthopaedic mattress. The 12.5 gauge spring is sturdier and more durable than a non-orthopaedic spring. Furniture Kraze offers a number of different orthopaedic mattresses that vary in style and price.
A sturdy 12.5 gauge spring that is topped with a polypad and layers of filling. There is a relationship between the amount of filling in a mattress, its depth and price. Generally, the better quality mattresses boast more depth. Please note that there are many different types of orthopaedic mattresses which range from medium-firm, firm, very firm. Do check in the description at the firmness rating of the orthopaedic mattress that you buy.
Quilted or Tufted?
Quilting on a mattress is the stitching which holds the filling together. People that do not like ‘buttons’ on their mattress prefer a quilted mattress.
A tufted mattress has buttons that hold the filling together. This provides a slightly firmer sleeping surface.
Many of our orthopaedic mattresses at Furniture Kraze are topped with a layer of memory foam to provide a more luxurious sleeping surface.
Pocket Sprung Mattress
A pocket sprung mattress is made from individually nested spring pockets as opposed to a singe spring. The spring count in a mattress is based on the number of springs present in a 5ft king size, so you have to bear in mind that a double mattress will have less springs and a 6ft superking will have significantly more.
Pocket sprung mattresses are designed to provide flexibility and support according to your individual body weight. So, if you sleep with a partner that is a lot heavier than you, a pocket sprung mattress will minimise the roll effect. Pocket sprung mattresses are towards the top end of the market and the number of spring pockets can be varied from around 600 all the way up to 3000 or more but we would suggest starting at 1000 at least, to get the benefit of the pocket springs! A higher spring count generally feels firmer than a lower spring count. Again, as with an orthopaedic mattress the option to top the pocket sprung mattress with a layer of memory foam is available which provides a softer more luxurious surface for your mattress. At Furniture Kraze we offer a range of Pocket Sprung mattresses at very competitive prices.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam was a technology originally developed by NASA to reduce the forces of space travel and launches during long space missions. Now we can all benefit from this fantastic technology by giving us superb comfort and the best nights sleep ever. Memory foam responds to your body temperature moulding to your individual body shape and providing the right comfort and support that you need.
